Tips for a healthy Thanksgiving

Article #115

As we are all well aware, holidays like Thanksgiving are a time for relaxation, time with loved ones, and perhaps most importantly: delicious food! So there’s the turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy, some cranberry sauce and stuffing and a slice of pumpkin pie. According to some estimates, that traditional Thanksgiving meal can add up to 3,000 calories. That being said, here are some tips on how to approach your celebrations this long weekend in way that is enjoyable, but will help you avoid adding on that extra pound.

Don’t skip breakfast and lunch: Your strategy may have been to save your calories for dinner but that’s a bad idea. You will more than make them up by gobbling everything on the table at dinnertime.

Keep yourself active over the holidays and you would be one step ahead in trying to keep that pound off. Plan a hike or stroll with your family after the meal and enjoy the fall season.

Plan a workout date the next morning: Instead of feeling bloated and lethargic the day after Thanksgiving, schedule a fitness date with a friend for that morning—then you have to show up!

Drink lots of water. It will help with digestion, elimination, and keep you hydrated.

Don’t deprive yourself. Holidays are a time to treat yourself, so don’t be afraid to! Obviously you don’t want to go overboard, but there is no reason to feel guilty about indulging. A few days of indulgence won’t totally mess you up.

Enjoy the holidays and be thankful for the 4 F's: family, friends, food and a four-day work week.
