The Secret to Lasting Fitness Success

Article #132

The rule is simple: if your diet has a time limit, then so does your results. Think about it. Have you ever heard of anyone who managed to keep the pounds off after completing a crash diet? Chances are you haven’t. It is just virtually impossible to do because the human body is not designed to do well at it. In fact, according a study published by Maria Azua on the Reader’s Digest website, crash diets may even cause withdrawal-like symptoms that ultimately prompt people to eat more after their diets end.

The same goes for get-fit-in-30-days type workout programs. They just don’t work long-term, especially for beginners who tend to get burnt out way before any form of noticeable results show up. The bottomline is that effective strength training workouts never have time limits.

By now, you’ve probably already realized that time limits are one of the biggest things that hold people back from enjoying lasting fitness success. What, then, is the secret to making it work? Well, it all boils down to the creation of good habits. It’s about making lifestyle changes that you can stick to for a long, long time. Fortunately, this is a lot easier to do than you think.

Creating good nutrition habits

Fitness, of course, requires both a good eating plan and sensible workout program. However, it is the eating part that most people have trouble with so it would be a good idea to start with it.

Let’s say you have a habit of eating a slice of cake with every meal and you’ve decided to just eat cake on weekends instead. According to a study published on the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) website, it takes about 10 weeks for new habits to form. Do you think you could just cut out so much cake from your life and stick with the change for 10 weeks straight? Unless you have insane amounts of willpower, chances are you’ll end up giving up after a week or two.

What you can do instead, is maybe replace one slice of cake a day with a glass of water. This allows you to easily cut out a total of seven slices per week from your diet—that’s a total of 28 slices per month—without even noticing it. It’s just once slice a day after all. And then, after the new habit is formed, you could easily build on it and just take out another slice per day.

Creating good workout habits

Of course, you could apply the same approach to your workouts. Just pick out the days you want to exercise, choose a convenient time to do so, and do a workout that’s easy enough to not burn you out. After about 10 weeks, you won’t even have to think about it and just do it automatically whenever your chosen day and time come up.

Just be sure to make your workouts a bit more challenging as soon as they become too easy so you can keep making progress. After all, progressive overload is the key to gains according to a study published on the OMICS International website.

Always think long-term

At the end of the day, there really are no shortcuts to fitness. It takes permanent lifestyle changes for lasting results to occur. However, it’s really not that difficult to do. Just start with the creation of simple habits and then just keep building on them as they become second nature to you.
